The quinceañera is a traditional celebration of life and gratitude to God on the occasion of the fifteenth birthday of a young Hispanic woman. The ritual emphasizes her passage from childhood to adulthood. The family usually requests a Mass or a blessing to be held in the Church. The rite is frequently celebrated in several countries in the Americas including: Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. It is frequently requested by Hispanic Catholics in the dioceses of the United States of America.
A quinceanera is not a "coming of age," but a special moment in the life of each fifteen year-old, whereby she re-dedicates her life to be a more perfect follower of Christ as The Blessed Virgin Mary did. Mary is the model and intercessor for all fifteen year-olds. At this age, she was asked of her own free will if she would be the one spoken of in the scriptures who would bring forth the Savior. Mary could have made many excuses but instead, she trusted and replied, "Let it be done to me according to your word."
With these words, which we know as the "Fiat" or her "Yes," this fifteen year-old journeyed on a pilgrimage of faith and remained in close union with Jesus, all the way to the Cross. So, each fifteen year-old on that special day will be asked to say her own "Yes" by persevering in the faith as she renews her baptismal vows and makes a public commitment to be as holy as possible in order to change and save mankind as Mary did.
Mary won the "Crown of Righteousness," the "Crown of Life," and the "Crown of Glory" which are promised to those who follow Christ. So each Quinceanera wears a crown on that day to remind her of the "Crown" that awaits her and all her companions when they complete their earthly sojourn as friends and followers of Christ. Then she completes the ceremony by bringing flowers to Our Lady and consecrating herself privately to be a witness for the entire Church that we are children of Mary and are under her maternal protection and care.
